The Theory Test
The theory test was brought in by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) in July 1996 and was designed to make learner drivers think about the practical elements they were taught by their instructor.
The theory test covers four main elements:
- Safety and environmental aspects of vehicles
- Driver attitude
- Traffic signs and regulations
- Effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on driver behaviour
The test comprises of 35 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test which tests your awareness at picking up potential hazards while driving.
The theory test can be taken during any stage of you learning to drive. It doesn’t have to be taken prior to you learning to drive the car behind the wheel and many instructors like to work on both practical and theory at the same time.
> What does the theory test comprise of?
Your theory test will take place at your local Driving Standards Agency Theory Test Centre. The test will be computer based and last 40 minutes. In this time you will have to answer 35 multiple choice questions. Some will require one answer while others may require you to select 2 or 3 answers.
The test is available in a variety of languages, including English, and there is also an option using British Sign Language for candidates who are deaf.
To pass the test you will need to get a score of 30 or above out of 35.
> The hazard perception test
In 2002 the DSA decided to bring in the Hazard Perception test to test peoples hazard awareness. The test involves a series of moving clips with sound media with the candidate being required to click when they saw a hazard developing.
The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazard, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions.
The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 for car drivers and all results to both tests will be given within minutes of completing the test.
