The main purpose of the practical test is to see if you can drive safely on the roads without the need for supervision. The test lasts between 38-40 minutes and is conducted from your local Driving Test Centre by a DSA examiner. The tests are designed so as to test you under varied traffic conditions and road layouts.

> The format of the test

Once you arrive at the test centre you will be asked to wait until your examiner appears. When the examiner appears he will ask you for proof of identity and you will be required to sign your test form. He will then ask you to escort him to your car where you will be required to read your number plate from the minimum required distance.

You will then be asked two questions as part of the “show me”, “tell me” part of the test. These questions will be related to vehicle safety or maintenance. If you answer one or both of the questions incorrectly you will have a driving fault being recorded.

“Show me” and “tell me” questions tend to revolve around 4 major aspects of the car:

-    Under the bonnet
-    Inside the car
-    Tyres
-    Lights

> After your driving test

Straight after your test your driving examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed. If you have passed your examiner will ask for your driving licence and present you with a test certificate. They will also give you a driving test report which will give you feedback on any faults you may have had while driving.

Your examiner will then give you the option of retaining your provisional licence and sending it to the DVLA to be upgraded to a full driving licence. This service is complete free.
